Sancerre is one of the Loire's best-known white wines though it also comes in shades of red and rosé. White Sancerre is made from Sauvignon Blanc which thrives on the limestone slopes. Where the soil has a high proportion of flint, the wines can sometimes described as having a gunflint character. The most solid, full-bodied Sancerres come from around the village of Bué while the village of Chavignol produces some of the regions finest wines.
