France
For its sheer diversity and quality, France is surely the richest wine nation on earth. From simple French country Chardonnays and Merlots right through to fine clarets and Champagnes, there really is a French wine for every taste and pocket. This section takes you on a tour of the main French regions and their wines. Getting to know them can be a hugely rewarding experience.
France, more than any other country, has a grand tradition of winemaking that has been handed down from father to son for generations. And yet, in the Universities of Bordeaux and Montpellier, France also has two of the world's most important wine research institutions. "Tradition" is a result of centuries spent refining and perfecting all aspects of the art and science of wine.
The national system of Appellations Controlées enshrines the French belief that wine is not just a drink, but an expression of place or terroir. It is not just Chardonnay from Chablis you're drinking, it is Chablis.
For the modern drinker perhaps more used to buying wine by grape variety - Cabernet, Shiraz, Pinot Grigio etc - this can seem a bit confusing, but with a little background knowledge things become much clearer. You'll learn all you need to know in the following sections not least that French wines are often excellent, frequently great value and more than that, they have real personality.
