September Wine Plan Tasting Notes Emiliana Vineyards Merlot 2007, Chile Viñedos Emiliana is one of Chile’s most innovative wineries and was the first winery in Chile to gain accreditation for ‘sustainable agriculture’. This method of growing vines allows minimal use of pesticides and fertilisers and demands a general respect for nature in the winemaking process. Not only is this environmentally friendly but winemaker, Antonio Bravo also believes it produces exceptional ruit quality and purity of flavours. Tasting this wine, we’re sure you’ll agree. Dark purple in colour, this youthful Merlot has an exuberant nose of black cherries and plums with violet notes. Rich and smooth, the luscious fruits come to the fore on the palate, with juicy, ripe plum and red berry flavours.A long finish with soft tannins and delicious hints of vanilla and mocha. This is a very versatile wine that you could enjoy without food but would be delicious with pasta or Mediterranean vegetables. 13% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code: 0950007F List Price: £5.49 Terrale Nero d’Avola Sangiovese 2007, Sicily Sicily is a wine growing country to watch out for, for it manages to achieve what few are able to do; produce fruity, new world flavoured wines, with all the character and heritage you would expect from an old world country. It has huge natural advantages in its favour – long hours of sunshine, low rainfall, volcanic rich soils, varying altitudes and exciting native grape varieties. The grapes for this wine are hand-picked from vines in Monreale DOC, just outside Palermo, where Calatrasi own 100ha of vineyards. This wine combines the indigenous Sicilian grape variety Nero d’Avola, with the Italian Chianti-grape, Sangiovese. Calatrasi believe in combining Italian tradition, with new world winemaking and consult with Australian winemakers to achieve the best results. Black fruits predominate on the nose, with hints of spice. On the palate, enjoy flavours of raspberry, blackberry and prunes, with a touch of cinnamon on the finish. Smooth and creamy, it would be well matched with tomato based pasta and vegetable dishes. 13% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code: 0938107F List Price: £5.99 Mario Bonete Syrah 2006, Almansa, Spain You may already be familiar with winemaker Juan Pablo Bonete, as he’s the man responsible for Averys favourite and Oz Clarke recommended, Marques de Rojas. Syrah is still quite a rarity in Spain, where historically growers have focused on classic Spanish varietals like Tempranillo and Garnacha. But where grown, it is proving to be spectacularly successful. Certainly this example from the widely undiscovered region of Almansa in eastern Spain, proves that it’s a grape well-suited to Spain’s Mediterranean climate and I for one, would like to see more of it. Aged in large American oak barrels for three months, this Averys exclusive has delicate hints of spice and soft, savoury characters. But the focus on this wine is surely its densely packed mature red fruits, with dark chocolate overtones. Smooth and smoky, with lovely sweet tannins, it is a perfect match for roast lamb and spicy red meats. This is truly a wine with character, richness and class. Del Sol Chardonnay 2005, Lodi, California Lodi is a Californian appellation approximately 100 miles east of San Francisco. Benefiting from the cooling breezes of the San Francisco Bay area and protected by the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, it enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cool nights. Not as prestigious as Napa and Sonoma, it offers fantastic value for money, whilst still producing wines in a classic Californian style. Seeking out value for money wines in California is no easy task but this one certainly ticked all our boxes – rich and rounded, with good depth of flavour. Bright golden colour, with aromas of banana, pineapple and peaches. Extended bottle aging has given this wine great richness and weight. Ripe and well rounded, with soft tropical fruit flavours and a gentle, creamy finish, it would stand up well to full flavoured herby or garlic chicken dishes. If you love Californian Chardonnay but are often put off by the price, this is a great wine for you. 13.5% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code: 0943905F List Price: £6.99 Domaine de Millet 2007, VdP Côtes de Gascogne The Côtes de Gascogne is producing some of France’s most popular white wines at the moment. And tasting this zesty, fresh blend of Colombard and Ugni Blanc, it is easy to understand why. It tastes remarkably like a Loire Sauvignon Blanc but at a fraction of the price. Domaine de Millet is one of the new breeds of estate in this area that have focused on these dry, refreshing whites and helped them to become so fashionable with the French. Pale lemon in colour with grapey, fresh aromas. Tangy, dry and refreshing, it exhibits ripe pear and apple fruit flavours. Light and very moreish, there is a delicate herbaceous character on the finish. A lovely aperitif, it is also very enjoyable with fish dishes or a salad niçoise. Let’s hope for an Indian summer so you can enjoy a glass of chilled, crisp Côtes de Gascogne in the garden this month. 11.5% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code: 0703007F List Price: £5.99 Vini del Sole Bianco Salento 2007, Cantine San Marzano, Puglia, Italy Puglia is the region situated on Italy’s ‘heel’ and historically was renowned for its cheap, bulk wines but not any more! Puglia is now one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy, producing a range of quality-driven red and whites from native grape varieties. Valentino Sciotti, owner of Cantine San Marzano is one of the key individuals responsible for the metamorphosis of Italy’s south. This white blend is full-flavoured, fruity and thoroughly delectable! Made from a blend of native grape varieties – Malvasia Bianca, Verdeca and Bombino Bianco. Straw yellow in colour, with intense aromas of ripe peach, passionfruit and honeysuckle. Fresh and vibrant, Mario left the wine unoaked to draw attention to the ripe, fruit flavours of apricot and mandarins. A delightful wine to enjoy with simply grilled or herb crusted fish dishes. Santa Isabel Chardonnay Viognier 2008, Mendoza, Argentina It is difficult to imagine a more picturesque or more ideal place to grow vines than in the foothills of the Andes in Argentina. The snow from the mountains melts down into the vineyards and supplies them with all the water they need. And mountain winds ensure the hot daytime temperatures are contrasted with cool nights. This gives the vineyards of Mendoza perfect ripening conditions and helps create wines like Santa Isabel that combine richness of fruit with finesse. Nieto Senetiner, the winery behind this new, tangy, fresh white is one of the stars of the Mendoza region. Regularly scooping 90 plus points from Wine Spectator and Parker for their premium reds, they make hand-crafted wines entirely from their own vineyards. With 300ha in the ‘Primera Zone’ of Lujan de Cuyo at 900 metres altitude, they are well placed to do so. They are so keen to share their passion for wine that they have set up a wine school offering courses for enthusiasts and professionals on subjects from wine blending to food and wine matching. Enjoy a flavour of Argentinean passion with this elegant white, courtesy of Discover Wine with Averys. All the grapes for this aromatic white are hand-picked from the Nieto Senetiner vineyards in the foothills of the Andes, which ensures the grapes arrive at the winery in the best possible condition. The blend is predominantly made Chardonnay with added Viognier to gives the wine its exotic fruit flavours. The nose is intense, with white fruit aromas and an attractive floral bouquet. On the palate, enjoy the tropical fruit, honey and fresh apple flavours. Unoaked, to allow the fruit to come to the fore, this wine is rich and rounded with very ripe fruit yet also elegant, owing to its balanced acidity. This is a world apart from some of the mass-produced wines made in the area. Enjoy it with spicy chicken dishes or vegetable stir-fries. 12.5% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code: 0948308F List Price: £5.99 Château Branda 2002, Puisseguin St Emilion Château Branda is a small 10ha estate in the satellite region of Puisseguin, adjacent to St Emilion. The satellite regions are renowned for making similarly refined wines to St Emilion but at much more attractive prices, offering excellent value for money. Château Branda is one of the region’s most innovative wineries and for this excellent 2002 they worked with top Bordeaux wine consultant Michel Rolland. Described by a certain wine critic as ‘the world’s most influential and important oenologist’, Michel is responsible for wines at some of Bordeaux’s finest properties, including Angelus, Pavie Macquin, Léoville Poyferré, Clinet and Le Pin. His philosophy is to make wines with as little intervention as possible that truly reflect the terroir and very ripe fruit flavours. Aged for nine months in oak, it has a fruity bouquet complimented by gentle spice. A soft and balanced claret blended from 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Hand harvested from low yielding vines, it has good fruit concentration and multiple layers of complexity. Full garnet red in colour with tawny hues on the rim. A complex early palate, with an elegant mid palate and soft, earthy characters. With gentle easy tannins and balanced fresh acidity, this is drinking perfectly right now. I would recommend decanting to enjoy the richness of flavours and enjoy with game dishes. 13% alc. Drink now to 2011. Bottle code 0929902F List Price £16.99/bottle Château le Menaudat 2005, Premières Côtes de Blaye Château le Menaudat has been in the hands of Mme Edouard Cruse’s family for over a hundred years. You will find it mentioned among the best growths in the premières Côtes de Blaye as far back as the 1868 edition of Bordeaux et Ses Vins. Their 15ha of vineyards are situated on clay limestone soils on the rolling hillsides opposite Pauillac. The Cruse family are my oldest friends in Bordeaux and I first visited Le Menaudat in 1961! The universally acclaimed 2005 vintage is one of their best yet. It is wines from petit châteaux like this that offer superb value for money and display all the hallmarks of this outstanding vintage. Made from 30 year old vines, this elegant Bordeaux is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. Judicious oak ageing has given the wine added complexity without overpowering the fruit. Good intensity of colour, typical of this outstanding vintage – dark red with purple core. The nose is still quite closed but showing good background complexity. Gentle soft fruit on the early palate and a particularly elegant mid palate, with notes of red berries and redcurrants. Well-integrated oak that compliments the soft fruit and a well-rounded finish. Attractive soft tannins ensure that this wine is drinking well now but it has the character and complexity to age and improve over the next five years. This is a delicate and stylish claret that I would recommend with roast dinners and simply grilled meats. 13.5% alc. Drink now to 2013. Bottle code 0105905F List Price £7.99/bottle Château La Chandellière 2000, Médoc Cru Bourgeois I am delighted to introduce to you a great value, mature claret from a lovely estate in the northern Medoc. Château la Chandellière is owned by Hubert and Didier Secret who produce fine, elegant clarets with excellent ageing potential, as this delicious 2000 vintage clearly demonstrates. 2000 was one of Bordeaux’s best vintages, with almost perfect ripening conditions, producing rich, concentrated wines with great longevity. The 2000 Château la Chandellière won a silver medal at the Concours de Bordeaux and is drinking wonderfully well at the moment. It is blended from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc grown on clay limestone over gravel soils. Aged for 12 months in barrels, it combines mellow fruits with well integrated oak. This is a lovely example of a good quality Cru Bourgeois, with the delightful complexity and maturity that you would expect from the superb 2000 vintage. Very dark in colour, with a lovely spicy Bordeaux nose and gentle hints of oak. A full-flavoured palate of soft red fruits with good depth of character. With soft but distinct tannins on the finish and good balanced acidity, this is drinking very well now. However, it still has plenty of life left in it and I think will go on to develop for a few more years yet. A classically-styled Bordeaux, this would be most enjoyable with roast pork or braised lamb shanks. 13% alc. Drink now to 2010. Bottle code 0938300F List Price £10.99/bottle Château de Carles 2005, Fronsac As you all know, 2005 was an extraordinary vintage in Bordeaux and finding good value wines from such a super vintage as this is no easy task. But Château de Carles is such a wine. Château de Carles is owned by Constance and Stephane Droulers who have 20ha of vineyards on clay limestone soils. They also have on board, one of the pioneers of modern winemaking Jean Luc Thunevin, described by Robert Parker as ‘one of Bordeaux’s qualitative revolutionaries.’ Thunevin oversees the winemaking ensuring very high standards and has helped place Château de Carles among the region’s most respected estates. Years ago the wines of Fronsac were considered superior to those in Pomerol! The result is this rich and sophisticated claret blended from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc grapes. The grapes are hand harvested and selected to guarantee ripeness of fruit and the wine is aged in barrel for 12 months to give complexity and a creamy texture. Dark garnet in colour. A youthful nose with delicate spices but still quite closed. A very attractive soft, rounded early palate with juicy ripe plum flavours and fine tannins on the finish. It is drinking very nicely now but I feel it will develop more complexity and richness over the next four to five years. A wine that combines the richness of fruit from this outstanding vintage with the elegance and finesse of a superb estate. An easy and attractive claret to enjoy with roast duck or lamb dishes. Rosemount Show Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2002, Coonawarra, Australia Coonawarra is famed for its Terra Rossa soils that are responsible for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. This wine from the well-known Rosemount stable has been matured for 20 months in a combination of new and two year old American and French oak barrels and left in bottle for 6 months before its release. This aging process has helped to make a wine with well-balanced fruit and oak characters. Intense dark garnet red colour. It has a rich blackcurrant bouquet that is enhanced by delicate oak nuances. Full, rich and ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit on the early palate, with lovely complexity of flavour in the middle and a soft tannin finish. Drinking very well now but shows excellent ageing potential. This is a classic Coonawarra Cabernet that reminds me of the great Rouge Homme wines from Coonawarra we sold in the 1980s. 13.5% alc. This wine is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet and Merlot grown on low yielding old vines, planted on gravel soils. Dark garnet red in colour, with a soft, velvety early palate and good depth of flavour. Not in the usual upfront fruit style of antipodean wines, this wine offers toasty, spicy flavours, with a hint of pepper and a smoky finish. An unusual New World red, this is savoury and well balanced, with firm but not excessive tannins. 14.5% alc. With St Emilion's Châteaux stealing the limelight, Côtes de Castillon wines such as this offer tremendous value for money too. Château la Bourrée has been in the Meynard family since the early 1800s, its terroir composed of clayey limestone and sandy soils, akin to those of St Emilion. Of course, 2005 was a fantastic vintage and with prices on the top château having gone sky high, it is the petit château wines that are the ones to snap up. Dark purple in colour, the nose is still quite restrained, with ripe fruit in the background. With a full, quite deep early palate and rustic characters on the mid palate, it is still rather tight and needs time to develop. This is a wine to buy now and enjoy over the next 5 years. 13.5% alc. With ironstone gravel soils and a similar climate, it is ideal for making the classic Bordeaux blends – Cabernet Merlot and Sauvignon Semillon. Cape Mentelle was one of the founding wineries of Margaret River and their wines have become the benchmark in these two styles. A delicate, quite restrained Sauvignon nose, with lively fresh apple characters and gentle herbaceous and earthy characters. A small portion of this wine is barrel fermented which gives added richness and complexity. Good acidity and balance, with a lively, fresh finish. 13% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code 0354507F List price £12.49 Pra Soave Classico 2007, Italy Soave has traditionally been known as a wine lacking in character or individuality and I have to confess I never used to like them. However, this example from Graziano Pra has changed my perceptions. Matt Kramer in Wine Spectator described a previous vintage, as ‘a wine that redefines’ and I couldn’t agree more. Unlike many Soaves it is fresh and elegant. The Garganega grapes for this wine are grown on Pra’s 14-hectare estate situated near the town of Monteforte d’Alpone in the premium Soave Classico subzone. The southeast facing vineyards are around 25 to 30 years old, which give this wine its richness. Clear, pale lemon yellow colour with a lively bouquet and delicate lime characters. It has none of the traditional ‘developed’ characters often associated with Soave. A stylish early palate, it enjoys crisp, lively flavours and a distinct minerality. A fresh, lingering finish, this is a great example of the modern, zesty Soave style, best enjoyed whilst young. 13% alc. Drink now to 2010 Bottle code 0892207F List price £11.29 Les Jumeaux Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Bordeaux Les Jumeaux (meaning ‘twins’) was inspired by Bristol’s historic twinning with Bordeaux. We worked very closely with my good friend Olivier Cazenave, to bring you this tailor made cuvée. The grapes were taken from selected vineyard sites and 25% was fermented in one-year-old barrels. This was not to impart any oak flavours but rather to add extra depth and complexity. The resulting wine has all the freshness and aromatics of Sauvignon Blanc with a little extra weight and richness. Pale golden colour. Fresh earthy richness on the bouquet with distinct cut apple character. Soft easy early palate, with lively grapefruit flavours in the mid palate. Delicate yet distinct acidity on the finish completes this well-balanced wine. A wine that exhibits good harmony of flavours between fruit richness and acidity. Drinking well now, it will develop nicely over the next one to two years. 13% alc. Take this Old Vine Grenache Shiraz, for example, with its richness of fruit and lush, creamy texture, it’s no wonder Cheviot Bridge is highly regarded. 2003 was a bumper harvest and many winemakers were struggling with a surplus of wine. In order to clear cellars and make way for the next vintage, they sold on their reserves at extraordinarily good prices. This led to this gem of a wine being available, sourced from old vines from the highly acclaimed Tatachilla estate, it was sold on to Cheviot Bridge at a very attractive price. This Grenache Shiraz blend has rich aromas of blackberries and balanced toasty oak. The old vine fruit is rich and concentrated giving ripe brambly fruit flavours and well-integrated oak. A touch of chocolate and peppery notes leaves a long, lingering finish. 2003 was an excellent vintage in South Australia and this sumptuous red has matured beautifully. He set up his own winery in 2007 and our buyers were the first to go and taste the fruits of his labour. Tailor-made especially for Averys, this smooth and fruit-driven Shiraz is a great example of Bob’s talent – making quality wines at a price that makes them accessible to everyone. Bright garnet red, with aromas of blackberries, raspberries and peppery notes. Ripe black fruits combine on the palate with archetypal spicy Shiraz characters. Upfront, juicy, young fruit make this wine a great match for grilled red meats. This is a great wine to have on stand-by in your wine racks, as it really is the perfect all-rounder. Rosemount Show Reserve Chardonnay 2005, Hunter Valley Rosemount is one of Australia’s best-known and best-loved wineries. Rich and ripe with peachy fruit and well-balanced oak, it is the type of wine that Australia’s success is founded on. Barrel fermented in French and American oak barrels and left to mature on its lees for 9 months, this is a wine of great complexity and is the Hunter Valley equivalent of good White Burgundy. 2005 was chief winemaker Philip Shaw’s last vintage at Rosemount before he set up his own winery and he said it was his best ever. Made from grapes grown on the preferred blocks of their Hunter Valley vineyards, it combines the richness of the celebrated Roxburgh vineyards with the lighter style from Giants Creek vineyards. Golden yellow in colour with complex aromas of fresh tropical fruit, biscuit and vanilla. The oak fermentation and maturation on its lees, give this wine its concentration and breadth of flavour. With buttery, peach and nectarine flavours and a smooth, creamy finish, this would be a perfect match for rich salmon dishes or herby chicken.
