Domaine de la Bastide Côtes du Rhône 2020

Côtes du Rhône AOP

Decanter was impressed by a previous vintage of Vincent Boyer's rich Rhône red, calling it "dynamic" with "bags of energy". Just wait till they try his 2020. From his Visan domaine, this is a classic blend with ripe bramble fruit, pepper and spice.

Domaine de la Bastide is an ancient southern Rhône property formerly run by Benedictine monks and before that as a farm by Knights Templar. (Vincent Boyer has plenty of artefacts to prove that, including ancient coins and a centuries' old wine vat!) The Boyer family bought it in 1989 and today second generation Vincent and Stephanie run the estate. Their vineyards mostly lie in the village of Visan and most of these great quality grapes go into the cru wine. However, some always end up in his luscious Côtes du Rhône. It's a rich, supple blend of top trio Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, with a splash of Mourvèdre, providing a balance of ripe fruit, freshness and silky tannins. Lovely now with grilled meats, a herby vegetable bake or at a bbq.

"There's nothing overdone, just really drinkable and expressive. Well balanced and well made" Matt Walls, Decanter
