Château Pey de Faure Bordeaux Rouge 2016

Bordeaux AOC

From a memorable vintage and with a few years’ ageing, this smooth, concentrated claret is coming into its own. It’s from an ancient estate, reinvigorated by the Ballande family. Merlot led, with defined structure, this makes smooth, supple drinking.

If you’ve enjoyed the Ballande family’s Château Pey de Faure before, you’ll know it’s a super find. Thanks to the “absolutely remarkable" (Antonio Galloni) 2016 vintage, the new release is better than ever. Château Pey de Faure’s history stretches back to the 16th century, but it was when the Ballandes (who also own Margaux’s Château Prieuré Lichine) took over the property in 1989 that quality soared. Thirty years later, the combination of old vines, a modern cellar and top-end winemaking allows them to craft smart, great-value Bordeaux. Rich in Merlot, with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc adding structure and finesse. Smooth and silky with hints of morello cherry and spice, it’s a fine match for roast lamb or game.
