Owner John Matta is a character, rarely seen without his brown Panama hat. He's an ace winemaker, too, four times voted Winemaker of the Year. At his beautiful 13th-century estate in the heart of Tuscany he makes this fine Chianti Classico Riserva. His outstanding reputation is built on meticulous attention to detail. All the work is carried out by hand and yields are kept low to produce optimum quality grapes. The wines are carefully matured in the cellars beneath the castle in traditional large oak casks known as ‘botte’. Only the best fruit makes it into the Riserva wines, where they spend two years maturing in these oak bottes. From the appealing 2019 vintage, this red is full of silky ripe cherry fruit with layers of cedary complexity.
