If you want generous, ripe fruit and spice in your wine, similar to a Châteauneuf but not quite the intensity and at a more friendly price, look for Cairanne. This cru village, just east of Orange, uses the same velvety Grenache grape, with a little Syrah. And this luscious red is from a brilliant vintage, at least as good as 2015. It’s from family owned Domaine Martin, founded in 1905 when Julien Martin bought a small plot of vines. In 1947 son Jules took over, planted more vines and built a winery. Today the estate is run by grandsons David and Eric, who have expanded the vineyards into many of the southern Rhône’s finest villages. With supple, spicy, bramble fruit, it’s an ideal red for lamb or a herby casserole, or to enjoy on its own.
