If you’re looking for an up-and-coming red to rival the big names of the Rhône at a yet-to-be-discovered value price, Domaine de Ju fits the bill perfectly. It comes from Ventoux, a relatively new appellation on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, overlooking Châteauneuf-du-Pape. And the secret to its success is that the vineyards are among the highest in the Southern Rhône. This extra touch of altitude makes all the difference - think Southern Rhône ripeness of fruit combined with a mountain coolness and juicy freshness.
Thanks to its high-altitude vineyards and an influx of top winemakers (including the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel), there’s a real buzz about Ventoux in the wine world right now. Vigneron Julien Cornud, or ‘Ju’ to his friends, lovingly tends his small plot of vines in Ventoux first purchased by his great-grandfather. He takes his grapes down the road to Cellier des Princes in Châteauneuf-du-Pape where it’s made by award-winning winemaker Thiérry Ferlay. With lots of juicy ripe berry fruit and a wonderful freshness typical of wines from the Ventoux.
