For one of the most revered and lavish styles of red in Italy, look to Amarone. Palazzo Grimani is a gorgeous, rich red from its finest producer, Allegrini. Amazing intensity thanks to air dried grapes, this offers dark chocolate, cherry and spice.

The Allegrini family’s winemaking heritage dates back to the 16th century, but their modern success can be attributed to Giovanni Allegrini, father of today's winemaker Franco. Giovanni built up his cellar through a combination of hard work, a love of the land and instinctive understanding of which grapes would thrive best on which sites. Giovanni died in 1983 and Franco has gained a reputation as the region's finest winemaker. Amarone is a hugely intense and weighty style of red due to the grapes being air dried 100 days before fermentation. The berries lose moisture so flavours and sugar are even more concentrated. This gorgeous, velvety red, almost portlike in style, is a treat to savour on its own or with steak or strong cheeses.
