A knockout red from Cornas, the northern Rhône’s smallest appellation. This superb Syrah is from the Chapoutier owned Ferraton estate, where “quality is surging” (Wine Spectator). Aromatic, savoury with layers of fruit, this has huge potential.
Tasting notes
Packed with blackberry, raspberry, cassis, herbal notes, savoury. Firm
Aroma
Lifted aromas of wild herbs, ripe cassis, spice, with granite edge
Hugh Johnson describes Cornas as “dark Syrah of macho vigour” (Wine Companion). It lies just below Hermitage and this particular cuvée comes from high altitude, granite clad slopes in the cooler north of the area – always the last to be picked. 70 year old Domaine Ferraton has a long-standing reputation for quality. However, since Chapoutier has come on board it has taken a big step higher. They began working together in 1998, with Michel Chapoutier buying the estate outright in 2004, but running it as an independent concern. The family is still very much at the helm. Oenologist Damien Brisset and the renowned Stéphane Ogier are also part of the ‘super team’. Made using biodynamic methods, this is a powerful red that will cellar well.
