Collina San Ponzio Langhe Chardonnay 2019

Langhe DOC

Piedmont is well known for its fine reds, Barolo and Barbaresco, but its misty hillsides also make fine, mountain-fresh whites. From a century-old family estate, this is a crisp, steely Chardonnay with cooked apple, citrus and lemongrass notes.

For over a hundred years, the Balocco family have been tending vineyards and making wine close to the village of San Ponzio. Up in the Langhe hills, east of the Tanaro river and south of Alba, they grow the classic grapes of this fine region – Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetta for the reds, Arneis and Chardonnay for whites. They have vineyards in some of the top crus. Chardonnay thrives in the mountain-fresh climate, producing a very crisp style, which you'll notice in this San Ponzio white. It's steely fresh with the zip to age for a few years to come. It's also deliciously refreshing now. Chill down, the wine is a great choice with fish, fennel risotto or a smoked chicken salad. With further ageing, it'll develop creamy weight and texture.
