Founded in 1834, Paul Jaboulet Aîné today continues to have a top flight reputation for its northern Rhône wines. It was owned by the family for nearly two centuries, until 2006, when real estate entrepreneur Jean Jacques Frey bought it. He is serious about wine. Already involved in Champagne, he has since purchased Château La Lagune in Bordeaux. Winemaking today is enthusiastically led by his eldest daughter, Caroline, who is converting Jaboulet's top vineyards to biodynamic methods. Domaine de Thalabert is their superb 45-hectare estate in Crozes, the wines of which far excel their appellation. Indeed, their quality is closer now to that of Hermitage itself. Syrah from 40-60 year old vines, grown on stony soils, this is a very fine red.
