Barón de Barbón wines always stand out for supreme quality and value, as you’ll know if you’re a fan of Rioja. This family cellar was founded in 1926 by José Murúa Villaverde, latest in a long line of Rioja winemakers. When he retired the winery was sold, but then in 1982 his son Julián Murúa Entrena repurchased the bodega to continue the family tradition, with great success. Now Julián’s highly talented son Javier has joined him. Their vineyards lie in the premium Alavesa, where grape quality was very good in 2016. This mellow Reserva was aged for two years in French and American oak barrels to lend a lavish layer of spicy complexity. It’ll show at its best with roast lamb or game, its fruit notes complementing the flavours of the meat.
