This is a red with a wonderful purity of silky black fruits. The sweet, essence of damson plum and black cherry combined with delicate vanilla and all sorts of subtle nuances of violets, spices and game. On the palate it is filled with fruit, yet there is an immediate sense of structure and concentration too, with ripe, smooth and spicy tannins and a tang of cherry acidity. This wine is layered, with spices and creamy oak building on the mid-palate. Astonishing value for money.
Created by Ramon Castaño Santa and his 3 sons, Bodegas Castaño is not nearly as old as the vines it owns. Starting quite small, the family has nurtured old plantings and re-planted other parcels and now owns about 400 hectares (10% of the D.O.) in four prime vineyard estates.
Bodegas Castaño, as it is known today for its entrepreneurial spirit, focus and vision
only the oldest, low yielding Monastrell vines grown in the fierce climate of southern spain, the concentration of aroma and flavour is immediately apparent here.
Tasting note:A weighty, complex wine with the added complexity of oak ageing. Dark red with wild blackberry, plum, clove and cinnamon aromas. Supremely smooth and lengthy.
