This is a phenomenal wine with almost three decades of maturity. It's from the renowned Bodegas Franco Españolas, founded 125 years ago as a partnership between France and Spain. It was when phylloxera had just swept through France and French winemakers needed an alternative region to make wine. They brought with them their barrel aging, a tradition that Rioja has long held onto. This is a magnificent, delicately nuanced Reserva, as you'd expect of a wine of this maturity. It still has its original cork. It may well crumble, but don't stress. If needs be, push into the wine, and pour the liquid through a sieve into a decanter. No splashing - it needs no airing! Best served with simple roast chicken to be able to savour all its flavours.
