Listrac is one of the six communes of the Haut Médoc, and probably it's least well known. It's taken a great name like Bruno Borie (also behind Saint Julien's Château Ducru Beaucaillou) to highlight the quality here. He took over the estate in 2009. It lies just a stone's throw from where his mother, Monique Rochette, was raised. So, he says, he took it on with "great reverence and trepidation". It has 35 hectares of vines and lies just 25km from the Atlantic, so when the wind blows from that direction, you can smell the ocean. It lends an edge of salinity to the wine, while the gravel and limestone soils add minerality. Aged 20% in new, the rest one-use oak barrels, this claret is maturing slowly. Decant and enjoy with fine meat dishes.

"Sweet black, graphite tinged fruit with quite an elegant, pencil-lead, Pauillac-like finish" Neal Martin
