Château Malescot Saint Exupéry is an 18th century estate that slipped into disrepair before the Zuger family took control in 1955. They invested significantly and wine quality has returned to at least troisième cru classé status. This wine is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on the estate’s deep, well drained, gravelly soil. Hand harvesting, a showpiece gravity-fed cellar (the first in the region) and 16 months’ ageing in 80% fine new oak have added layers of subtle complexity and vanilla oak notes to the deep, luscious fruit. This is a serious claret. While approachable now, it will reward further cellaring. For now, decant at least a couple of hours before serving with a fine roast or stuffed portobello mushrooms.
