To find a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru of this maturity is a rare treat. It's from a forgotten vintage, that Decanter described as producing "very good wine", while Wine Enthusiast enthused, "this vintage has produced many excellent wines, some verging on superb, with quality that reaches deep into the unclassified estates." Pierre Mirande is the 4th-generation of his family to head up Château La Rose Côtes Rol, a small 9-hectare estate in this premium region. Their vineyards are mostly planted to Merlot, as you'd expect, with Cabernet Franc and just a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. These mature, half-century-old vines produce flavours of richness and depth, while ageing in part new oak brings cedar complexity. A mellow, classic claret.
