For Pomerol quality but without the exceptionally high price tag, look to the best estates of Lalande next door. Château Les Hauts Conseillants is a small 10-hectare property founded in 1973 by Leopold Figeac. He restored a 4-hectare vineyard, then with his daughter and son in law, Jean Baptiste Bourotte, acquired another six prime hectares. Today this couple are in charge and have raised quality with the assistance of top wine consultant, Michel Roland. The estate grows mostly Merlot on its fine sandy clay soils, with gravel subsoils, along with Cabernet Franc, ageing the wine for 15 months in French oak barriques. A third of them are new - a clear indication that quality is serious and the wine will be long aged. Fruit filled and grippy.

"Nice, polished tannins, giving form to the wine. Black and blue berries. Fresh finish" James Suckling
