Critic James Suckling wrote abut the 2014 vintage ‘the Left Bank made truly superb wines’. This is certainly true of Château des Brousteras, an opulent red and winner of two Gold medals. Ripe blackcurrant with cedar spice and supple tannins.

Château des Brousteras is a small family-run property in Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, just a few kilometres from renowned Saint-Estèphe. As it falls just outside the Saint-Estèphe boundary, it's classed as a plain Médoc and subsequently comes with a sensible price tag, while 'Cru Bourgeois' status ensures superior quality. Their vineyards lie just a stone’s throw from the Gironde estuary, so benefit from a moderate climate and grapes of excellent quality. This 2014 is a blend of plummy Merlot with cassis-scented Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 12 months in small oak barrels. This is a beautifully complex Médoc with layers of black fruits, cedar and mocha spice. Best to open early and decant – a perfect match with spiced lamb or aged cheese.
