From a Barsac 1er Grand Cru Classé, this Coutet is a terrific wine, deserving of its high scores. Decanter calls it: “Bright and fun, a lovely easy, sleek texture”, while Vinous says: “a persistent finish drags you back for another sip. Superb”.

The effort that goes into making a single bottle of Sauternes is astonishing, making the sensational Château Coutet amazing value. Yields are a ridiculously small – 3 hectolitres per hectare! This Barsac property is a 1er Grand Cru Classé for good reason, yet being one of the largest in Barsac, its wines tend to be reasonably priced. And its sweet wines are truly exceptional – intense, honeyed, layered, with a precision-like seam of searing freshness, with complexity and spice from ageing in half new oak barrels. This 2022 is full of dried apricot, buttered citrus, and honeyed layers – an opulent sweet wine with a fresh finish. And in a vintage like 2022, there's never been so much to enjoy about this half-bottle-sized gem.
