Château Haut-Fonrazade 2008

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru AOC

A rare treat to enjoy an elegantly mature, Grand Cru Saint-Emilion claret. It’s from the fine 2008 vintage that enjoyed an Indian summer, boosting ripeness just before harvest. Poised with silky structure and savoury notes from 14 years' age.

On the western edge of medieval Saint-Emilion lies to the tiny Grand Cru property of Château Haut-Fonzarade. Its four hectares of vineyard lie on exceptional clay and sandy soil, just a stone's throw from the Premier Grand Cru Classé Château Angélus, the claret of which reaches over £270 a bottle. Haut-Fonzarade is made very traditionally, fermented in concrete vats, then aged for a year in oak barrels, with a large proportion of that (60%) new. This lends a serious layer of toasty vanilla and structural tannins to the wine, which has helped it go the distance. It's rare now to discover a parcel of the 2008, but this wine has aged into elegant maturity. Merlot with a little Cabernet Franc, the wine is beautifully mellow with savoury notes.

"Drinking beautifully now, this mellow, evolved Grand Cru Saint-Emilion is a real treat" Jennie Perry
