From the tucked away Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, on the Right Bank, this is a charming, Merlot-centred claret from an excellent vintage. Now with five years' age, it offers bright fruit, silky, melding tannins and complexity. A Bordeaux charmer.

For five generations, the Réaud family have proudly owned Château Subilaux on Bordeaux's Right Bank. In 1985, the fourth generation, Jean-François Réaud, made the decision to focus exclusively on making wine. His son has now taken up the baton, extending the estate from 7 hectares to 37, with 27 in the Côtes de Blaye and the rest just outside the boundaries, in Bordeaux. As you'd expect in this area of Bordeaux, Merlot is the dominant grape, supported by both Cabernets. Quality in 2016 was very good indeed, only slightly overshadow by the charm and the fruit of the 2015 vintage that preceded it. With five years' age, this claret is beautifully supple and showing all its fruit. There's still no rush. Ideal for roast meats or a cheesy gratin.
