For claret that far outstrips its Médoc Cru Bourgeois label, look for Château Blaignan. It's an historic property, with vineyards dating back to the 14th century and Cru Bourgeois status since 1932. These days the winemaking is guided by the expert eye of Eric Boissenot. Described by Decanter as ‘one of the most influential figures in Bordeaux’ his clients include first-growth names such as Lafite, Latour and Margaux. Quality focused and sustainable methods in the vineyard, plus a newly built cellar in 2010, Chateau Blaignan has gone from strength to strength. The result: aromatic red fruit, excellent structure and impressive length. A class Médoc, let the bottle stand to settle any sediment, open early and decant. Drink or cellar.
