Château Larrieu Terrefort 2016

Haut-Medoc AOC Cru Bourgeois

Cru Bourgeois Haut Médoc with a touch of Margaux elegance in this fine claret with four years' age. It's from a property that straddles both appellations and from a great classic vintage that is beginning to drink well now. Silky, expressive fruit.

The pretty property of Château Larrieu Terrefort is unusual. It has vineyards both in the revered Margaux appellation (3.5 hectares) and just beyond the boundary, in the Haut Médoc (4.5ha). That makes its Cru Bourgeois Haut Médoc excellent value. Already over 30 years old, the vines are planted on premium gravel and sand soils, which keep them well drained and the grapes focused in flavour. As you'd expect, Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety here, supported by supple Merlot, all vinified traditionally in concrete vat. Ageing for over a year in French oak barriques has lent extra complexity and finesse. With four years' age, the wine is already drinking well. Open an hour in advance and enjoy with roast meats or toad in the hole.
