Pic Saint Loup is a superstar of southern France and produces some of the finest wines of the Languedoc. Finest among them is this château, founded by Gérard Bru. Syrah and Grenache from big pebble soils, all fruit, no oak, it's rich, pure and sleek.

For some of the finest Languedoc reds, head for Pic Saint Loup. There you'll discover Gérard Bru, a passionate champion of the appellation and behind some of its best wines. His vineyards occupy exceptional sites, with clay and limestone soils, topped by large galet stones (like Châteauneuf-du-Pape). That and the warm Mediterranean climate results in a very luscious style. From the start he's employed some top-name consultants – first Bordeaux's Michel Rolland, now Philippe Cambie. He also boasts the largest barrel in the world – so big there's a shop inside! Critic Andrew Jefford called Gérard Bru "a dark horse", whose grandfather used to swap wine for potatoes. He also specialises in Wagyu beef. A perfect partner to this fine, rich red.

"The wines have beautiful purity and plenty of freshness. Easily one of my favorite estates" Jeb Dunnock
