Antonio Galloni writes “Léoville-Barton is one of the very few wines, from any appellation, that combines power and finesse with such grace in 2017; a wine of regal elegance and head-spinning beauty”, awarding it 96 points. But then Léoville-Barton is always one of those châteaux that true claret lovers speak of with a smile. One of the real greats of Saint Julien, often described as “the ultimate Englishman’s claret”, so highly is it rated this side of the channel. The 2017 is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with as much as 93% in the blend, topped up by just 7% Merlot. With 60% aged in new oak barrels the result is a dark, muscular claret with superb aromatics that will unquestionably cellar beautifully for up to decades to come.
