Château Pedesclaux may have only been classified as 5th Growth in 1855, but today it far exceeds this level. It was founded in 1810 by négociant Pierre Pedesclaux, who helped shape the 1855 Classification. It went through a period of neglect until new owners in the 1950s, the Jugla family, bought it. However, it’s the man who took over in 2009 – Jacky Lorenzetti – who has really made a difference. Owner, too, of Lilian Ladouys, he has made a massive investment in the cellar and vineyards. He’s added 12 hectares of vines on the Milon plateau, next door to Lafite and Mouton Rothschild, reduced yields and totally modernised the winemaking facilities. Ageing in 60% new oak for 18 months has lent this wine complexity and longevity. Decant early.
