If you’ve enjoyed the Ballande family’s Château Pey de Faure before, you’ll know it’s a super find. Thanks to the “pretty wonderful" (Jancis Robinson) 2019 vintage, the new release is better than ever. Château Pey de Faure’s history stretches back to the 16th century, but it was when the Ballandes (who also own Margaux’s Château Prieuré Lichine) took over the property in 1989 that quality soared. Thirty years later, the combination of old vines, a modern cellar and top-end winemaking allows them to craft smart, great-value Bordeaux. Rich in Merlot, it has a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to add structure and finesse. Smooth and silky with hints of morello cherry and spice, it’s a fine match for roast lamb or game.
