Second wines of the great châteaux often represent some of the best value drinking in Bordeaux. That’s doubly true of Clos du Marquis, because it’s not actually a true “second wine”. Rather than being selected once the best barrels have been picked for £100+ Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis has its own, ring-fenced parcel of vines in the same vineyard. So the quality’s far higher than the average “second”, but the price is just as keen. Writing in Vinous, Antonio Galloni comments “flavours really sizzle, highly expressive”, citing its quality as down to the 72% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Those concentrated flavours and aromas will age for many years to come, though it’s designed for earlier drinking pleasure than its sibling.
