We have been very fortunate to secure this parcel from Señorío de Sarría, one of the best wineries in Navarra. It's made from mostly Cabernet, complemented by Spain's native, perfumed Graciano and a splash of Garnacha. That's typical of Navarra, a region in the northeast, next door to Rioja, but one that's as influenced by France as it is by its neighbour. As long ago as the 1980s, it was experimenting with Bordeaux grapes alongside the Spanish. Aged in American and French oak barriques for 24 months, the rest in bottle, Viña del Portillo displays complex spice aromas, with dark berry and damson flavours and hints of vanilla from oak ageing. The perfect partner with roasted meats and game. For best results decant an hour before serving.
