Many wine insiders see Chenin Blanc as South Africa’s star grape, not least because of the brilliant value they offer. When the wineries were state run, yields were kept very high and the wines were not inspiring. Now in the hands of great producers like this, they have a lovely bright fruit intensity and freshness. Oude Kaap is named after the Cape of Good Hope, known as ‘Old Cape’ to the Dutch settlers who first made wine in South Africa over 350 years ago. Oude Kaap captures the romantic heritage of Cape Dutch architecture, successfully combining centuries old tradition with modern technology. With lots of ripe, juicy tropical fruit and a zip of citrus on the finish, this is delicious with seafood risotto, goat’s cheese or grilled fish.
