Lying on France's eastern edge, Alsace is famous for its exquisite, pure fruit wines. One of its finest domaines is Bott Geyl, founded in 1795 by Jean-Martin Geyl and today run by Jean Christophe Bott and his wife Valérie. Jean Christophe took over in 1993, having gained experience in Meursault, Germany and the New World. He converted to organic in 2000, then biodynamic in 2002, uses wild yeasts for fermentation and firmly believes in minimal intervention in the cellar. He has 80 parcelles of vines over his 15 hectares, including six Grands Crus. Sonnenglaz is one of the finest. With heady rose petal and lychee scents, exotic fruit and fine minerality, this is a fine Gewurztraminer worthy of Grand Cru status. Superb with creamy pork dishes.
