Domaine Martin Les Sommets de Rasteau 2019

Rasteau AOP

The NY Times talks of “the hedonistic appeal and great value” of reds from Rasteau – “fruity, heady and powerful”. None more so than rich, spicy Domaine Martin. Blending Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, it’s packed with ripe, velvet-smooth fruit.

Perched on a hill, just 24km from Châteauneuf in the southern Rhône, Rasteau makes gorgeous, rich reds much like its more famous neighbour. Vines and wines go back here to the BC era. In 1937, its wines became part of Côtes du Rhône and finally, in 2010, they were promoted to full AOP status, putting them on a par with mighty Gigondas next door. Indeed, Domaine Martin can claim a key part in securing this promotion. The property goes back to 1905, when Julien Martin bought the 5-hectare estate. In 1947 his son Jules took over, expanding the vineyards and building a winery and today it’s run by grandsons David and Eric. Using the finest, old-vine fruit of their Rasteau vineyards, this red is intense and spicy. Ideal for lamb or a herby stew.

"Rich and packed with layers of fruit, smoky liquorice, herbs - decant early to give it time to open" Mark Hoddy
