Charmes is one of the great Premiers Crus of Meursault. That should be of no surprise as its vines grow on a slope that runs close to the Meursault/Puligny divide. This remarkable 2019 is from a family estate founded by Joseph Matrot in 1909 and now run by his granddaughters, Elsa and Adèle. There is much praise from critics: "great wines are being made at this address" wrote Neal Martin, while Wine International described them as "a top-class Meursault producer." They like to pick early to ensure racy freshness and use oak very sparingly, so the vineyard and its fruit do the talking. Ageing on fine lees lends a lovely creamy texture and weight, underscored by a characteristic minerality, lending that crisp raciness. Delicious now or age.
