A terrific, old-vine red from Domaine Montirius. Its 'Secret' is that it's all Grenache from the cru village of Sablet. But all-Grenache isn't allowed there, hence the Côtes du Rhône label. Raspberry, liquorice and vanilla, it's a wine to savour.

This is a rich, warming southern Rhône red that punches way above its Côtes du Rhône status. It's from Christine and Eric Saurel at their fifth-generation estate based in Vacqueyras. Today, they are assisted by their children too, with eldest Justine as winemaker. Their 58 hectares of vines are scattered through the finest terroir of the southern Rhône, largely in Vacqueyras and Gigondas, with this small parcel in beautiful Sablet. Appellation rules dictate that Sablet must comprise more than one variety, but undeterred Jardin Secret is pure old-vine Grenache. It's too good to dilute! It's like their own ‘secret garden’ they say, as they tend their small, one-hectare plot. Unoaked, it’s a fresh, fragrant red with great raspberry length.
