Top wines from the standout Corbières cru of Boutenac easily fetch £50 a 75cl bottle. That makes Metairie Blanche a bit of a steal. It's from a small family estate with very old vines, ensuring real weighty depth to this lush, ripe, herb-scented red.

Only since 2005 has the renowned Boutenac cru of Corbières existed. But within that time, the price of its wines have rocketed thanks to the pulling power of legend winemaker Gérard Bertrand. The Lazuttes family knew they had a jewel on their hands long before that – they have owned their tiny domaine for many generations. Today Louis and his son Pierre-Olivier are in charge. All the grapes are estate grown, from very old, low-yielding vines – mostly Carignan, with a little Grenache and Syrah. Half of the wine is made by the special whole grape fermentation method, which lends a lovely silky, gulpable fruit style, while the other half is made more traditionally. Ageing in new oak is a clear indication of the seriousness of the wine.
