Domaine Saint-Damien 2018

Languedoc AOP

For an authentic southern French red, bag a case of this. It's from a tiny family estate, one of the wines of which is listed by a 3-Michelin-star chef. A velvety, dense red with power and complexity, blended from Fitou, Corbières and Minervois.

The Mazard family have owned their tiny Languedoc property since 1545! They pride themselves on their vineyards in three top enclaves - in Fitou, Coribièrs and Minervois. Just in 2016 a new rule was introduced to allow this tripartite blend to be labelled Languedoc AOC. Their gorgeous red certainly proves that this was a wise move. In fact, it's been listed by a 3-star Michelin chef in the region. The estate is run by Jean-Pierre and his wife, along with their two children. And production is tiny. The wine is a blend of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah from three sites – the coast, inland, where the grapes pick up floral and herbal hints and close to the Pyrenean foothills, in Corbières. A truly authentic, appealing southern French red.
