Domaine de la Cotelleraie Le Vau Jaumier 2017

Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil AOC

Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil lies in the Loire Valley, making charming, silky, fragrant reds. It’s a tiny appellation and its wines rarely reach the UK. Gérald Vallée is one of its leading winemakers and his 2017 is an fine, elegant, pure fruit red.

The Loire may be best known for its Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Muscadet, but the region is also home to some of the world’s finest Cabernet Franc. Wine writer Hugh Johnson says Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil and its close neighbours Chinon and Bourgueil make “the Loire’s most celebrated red wines” which “for their quality are seriously undervalued”. Le Vau Jaumier is the flagship wine from Domaine de La Cotelleraie, Gérald Vallée’s organic estate in the heart of the area. His wines are known for their fruit intensity, which he achieves by severely restricting the yields, particularly in the small hillside parcel of vines that provides the fruit for this delightful red. Bright, silky and fragrant, serve cool with chicken or mushroom croustade.
