Jacky Blot is a star Loire winemaker. A broker by trade, he fell in love with the wines of Montlouis and set out to show that its whites could be finer than even its neighbour, Vouvray. Starting with 8 hectares in 1989, he now has 25, every vine painstakingly cared for organically. Ploughing between rows to encourage vines to dig deeper, hard pruning and deleafing are just some of his methods. At 200 metres altitude, Les Haut de Husseau is one of the highest vineyards in Montlouis. Its soils, clay and silex on pure limestone, lend the wine even more intensity and tightly wound acidity and fruit. Using natural yeasts, all oak fermented (20% new), completely dry, a slow process, taking sometimes up to a year, this is a remarkably fine Chenin.
