A dark, rich red from a cru area of the Languedoc, where top wines reach £40 a pop, some £130! It's from a 4th generation grower, who started winemaking in her garage and is set for stardom. Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, it's ripe, spicy, yet fresh.

Our Languedoc buyer, Mark Hoddy, is resident of Pézenas. It's a newly designated cru and when he tasted this wine, a chance purchase, he went hotfoot to find the winemaker and the estate. It belongs to Hélène Jougla, a fourth generation grower in the Gabian district of Pézenas. When she took over the tiny family estate, she was determined to make the wine herself, so converted the garage that she's now outgrown. She has 10 hectares of south and southwest facing vineyards on special basalt soil, which lends a lovely richness, complexity and freshness to the wines. This really is a class find, with wines up the road going for £40 to £130 a bottle. Classic southern French grapes, this is a generous, ripe, beautifully balanced, silky red.
