Domaine la Haute Marone Le Torrent du Trignon Sablet 2018

Côtes du Rhône-Villages AOC Sablet

Wine writer Simon Woods said of a previous vintage of this Sablet, "Great value red wine from the southern Rhône, think Châteauneuf du Pape, but half the price." 2018 was a great vintage, so there's generous, ripe black fruit and savoury richness.

Just next door to Gigondas, in the southern Rhône, lies Sablet, a cru Villages producing luscious herb and spice scented reds. We love this full bodied, velvety, approachable 2018 from Alphonse Barqueros, featuring largely Grenache, the main variety in this part of the Rhône. His small estate lives in the shadow of the towering Dentelles de Montmirail, bordered on one side by a small stream, which occasionally is more of a torrent. Hence the wine's name – Le Torrent du Trignon. Alphonse ferments his wine very traditionally, maturing it for nearly two years in seasoned oak barrels. The wine is already very appealing and smooth, but open early if you can. It's a top choice with pink roast lamb or duck, or with a herby vegetarian casserole.

"Smooth, well rounded with a long finish. Enjoyed this with duck. Superb!" Online Review
