El Valin Mencía 2015

Bierzo DO

Huge in Spain yet seldom seen in the UK, the wines of Bierzo are set to be the next BIG thing. This impressive example comes from one of the oldest wineries in the region and it’s made by Ricardo Palacios – a driving force in Bierzo’s resurgence.

Here are three names every wine lover should memorise. First there’s the region of Bierzo – a rural corner of northwest Spain that’s producing some of the country’s most exciting wines. Secondly, remember Mencia – it’s the region’s signature grape, which produces glorious wines like this that are full of flavour, yet lithe, crisp and fresh. Imagine a cool vintage Rhône, or perhaps Burgundy on steroids! And thirdly, remember Ricardo Pérez Palacios. He’s the winemaker at Vinos Guerra – one of Spain’s oldest working wineries – and a founding member of Bierzo’s new Consejo Regulador, who are very successfully raising their standards and the region’s profile with amazing wines like this. Try serving it with lamb, bean stew or Manchego cheese.
