Lorraine and Neil Ashmead were great pioneers in the Barossa Valley. Thankfully for all wine lovers, they had the foresight to save the Command Block vineyard in the 1980s when they were setting up their estate. Planted in 1894, Command Block is now recognised as one of Australia’s finest plots, yet in the ’80s the government was encouraging growers to grub up old vines. Today these vines are regarded as the crown jewels. 1984 was the first year the Ashmeads made a single vineyard wine from the fruit, so this spellbinding 2015 is the 31st release. We were delighted to receive a small allocation. Made in old fashioned open top fermenters, punched down by hand and aged in all-new French and American oak, this is a remarkable, ageworthy wine.
