Here’s a claret that proves there’s great value to be found when you visit the less fanfared châteaux of Bordeaux. Château Saint-Paulin is the pride and joy of the Auduteau family, who began making wines on the property in 1730. Today it’s sixth-generation Jacqueline Auduteau and her son, Thierry, who manage the estate. They wait until the very last moment to harvest their grapes, ensuring maximum fruit ripeness and heady aromas. Made predominantly from Merlot, this has an abundance of approachable, ripe damson flavour. Touches of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec add layers of darker fruits and aromatic intensity. From another 5-star vintage, this claret makes supple drinking and pairs well with simple roast meats or vegetable kebabs.
