Star of the northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie, from a first-class estate. It’s also from a vintage that has produced fabulous wines. The lieu-dit Montmain has schist and granite soils, which result in velvety, dark-chocolate fruit with floral finesse.

Founded in 1946, Domaine Ferraton has always been highly regarded. Now the Chapoutiers have come on board, “the quality from this estate continues to soar” (Wine Advocate). The family started working with Michel Chapoutier in 1998, the latter buying the estate outright in 2004, but running it very much as an independent concern, with the family still at the helm. This is one of their finest wines, regularly awarded top scores. It's a single vineyard Côte-Rôtie from a lieu-dit in the northwestern corner. Schist and granite soils make the vines dig deep and limit yields. The result is a wine with poise and intensity, elegance and power. Decant the wine beforehand to let all its fruit finesse and floral charms unfurl. Ideal served with lamb.
