Finca Montalvillo is a new project for Javier Murúa. It lies in Rioja Oriental, its extensive vineyards at 520m in the Sierra de Yerga foothills. The cooler climate means added freshness and aroma in the grapes, while the large pebbled soil helps regulate the temperature to avoid extremes. We all think of Tempranillo as a red grape, but there is a little known white version too. It was discovered in a vineyard in 1988, a natural mutation of the red variety. It's now an authorised Rioja grape and produces delicious, crisp whites like this. 2019 was a top year, with low yields but quality was high. A slow ripening has captured its bright aromatic fruit. If you like crisp Sauvignon, give this white a try. Great solo or with lighter dishes.
