Montefalco lies in central Umbria, a forgotten subregion of Italy that is rising up once more. Sagrantino is its secret grape, lending deep fruit, with hints of herbs and liquorice and firm tannins. For the latter reason, it only makes up 15% of this rich, ageworthy wine. Founded just in 1995, Còlpetrone is a leading estate in Montefalco. Winemaking is under the guidance of one of Italy's most renowned consultants, Riccardo Cotarella. The majority of the wine is dark, cherry filled Sangiovese, with portions of both Merlot and Sagrantino, all traditionally fermented, then long aged in vat. With firm tannins and classic Italian acidity, the wine has aged well. Open early and enjoy with beef ragú with pasta, a hearty lasagne or grilled meats.

"Candied strawberries and caramelized orange peel, hints of ash and red licorice. Full-bodied palate" James Suckling
