Dão has long made some of the finest wines of Portugal, wines that age for years. Now, with some modern know how, they are even better. Made by the award winning Lucia Freitas at her small family estate, it has silky blackberry and spicy length.
Tasting notes
Silky start, with complex black fruits and spicy length
Aroma
Mellow raspberry, blackberry, cassis and spices
Lying just south of Douro, Dão has long been known for its authentic reds. At times, the wines could be too traditional, but today they have been given a modern makeover, without losing that treasured authenticity. The best are regarded as the finest in Europe. This is one from Lucia Freitas, from vineyards planted by her grandfather 40 years ago, on high-up granite soils. These factors have lent an elegance and freshness to the wine for graceful ageing. Lucia's won many plaudits since she started and in 2010, was named among the Top 10 most influential Portuguese winemakers. Here she uses a trio of native grapes. With fours years' age, it's silky, mellow, with lively fruit. Great to cut through richer meat dishes or firmer fish like tuna.
