The great port firm of Fonseca was founded in 1815 by João Santos do Fonseca and today remains one of the region's leading houses. Critic James Suckling wrote in his book, "The vintage ports of Fonseca are perhaps the most consistently great of them all. Not only do they have a striking fleshiness and powerful richness when young, but they retain that youthfulness for decades." Guimaraens port is made in vintages they deem not quite serious enough for a full Fonseca declaration, but where the fruit is deep, rich and supple, ideal for earlier drinking. Made still by traditional grape treading in stone lagars, “Fonseca Guimaraens is regularly one of the finest and richest vintage ports” writes Hugh Johnson. Best cellared until at least 2027.
